BCNF Education Award Guidelines

The purpose of this educational scholarship program is to:

  • assist individuals with NF to attain their educational goals
  • help them to meet their career objectives
  • increase their employability
  • allow individuals with NF to succeed to their fullest ability.

Funding Available:

A minimum of two financial awards, valued at $500 each for full-time studies, will be awarded annually. Part-time students are encouraged to apply; awards may be pro-rated depending on academic burden and the individual circumstances of the applicant. The exact amount to be awarded annually will be established by the Board of Directors at the January meeting in the year the funds are to be awarded.

Duration of Award

The scholarship will be a one-time award.

Application Management

If the BCNF receives more application than there is funding available a lottery will be conducted.

Award Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following criteria to qualify:

  • have Neurofibromatosis. A letter from their GP verifying the diagnosis will
  • be required
  • be a member of the BCNF
  • be at least 17 years of age by August 1st in the year of application
  • be a resident of BC. If applicant lives in BC the funds can be applied worldwide. If applicant lives outside of BC, they will need to be planning to study within the province of BC.
  • have applied to study, or be currently enrolled, in a recognized educational program with the goal of increasing employability.
  • be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant.

Award Restrictions:

Applicant must be enrolled in full-time studies.
Part-time students can apply and awards may be pro-rated depending on academic burden and the individual circumstances of the applicant.

Funds may be use toward any post-secondary program (such as university, community colleges, adult continuing education, community arts program, business or trade schools).

Application Procedures:

Applications must be received by May 1. They will include:

  • A brief written submission (no more than two pages) that includes:
  • Applicant?s short and long term career goals
  • Summary of how the proposed courses will help applicant reach their goal
  • Description of the impact NF has had on their life
  • A resume detailing education, volunteer and work experience.
  • 2 reference letters
  • 5 copies of the completed application

The Scholarship committee will review the applicants and make recommendations to the Board of Directors for final approval at the May Board meeting. Winners will be notified in June.

Funds will disbursed upon the office receiving proof of registration.

Funds are to be used within 18 months of being awarded.

Applications will be available from the BCNF office and from the BCNF website. Information will be forwarded to NF Canada and the other provincial NF organizations for circulation to their membership.
